Event Outline

This seminar will focus on the ICJ, which is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. In particular, it will deal with the composition of the Court, its governing Statute and procedural Rules, the basis of the Court’s jurisdiction, ancillary proceedings before the Court, how a case before the Court unfolds and the importance of putting a team together led by an Agent to present claims, the sources of law applied by the Court and how it handles evidence, and the final and binding nature of its decisions. The presentation will draw on regional case examples, including Singapore’s experience in litigating the Pedra Branca case before the Court, the recent Judgment in the Cambodia-Thailand Temple of Preah Vihear case and the Indonesia-Malaysia case concerning the islands of Sipadan and Ligitan
