Core academic freedom protects a faculty member’s freedom in research & teaching within a discipline’s Wissenschaft. Legal protections for academic freedom vary and include statutory, contractual, and constitutional provisions. The lecture revisits Mill vs. Marcuse and ends with puzzle of academic freedom: it is only justified when research and teaching proceeds in accordance with the standards of a Wissenschaft, but who decides what constitutes a Wissenschaft?
